Federal government boosts funding in latest homelessness strategy

OTTAWA (NEWS 1130) – The Trudeau government is releasing more details about its plan to tackle homelessness in Canada.
The minister for social development says beginning in April, the feds will be ramping up the amount of cash handed out to communities struggling with a homelessness problem. It will increase the number of communities receiving the funding the following year.
By 2022, the federal government plans to spend $237-million to address the issue, which is double the amount that was allocated when the Liberals first took office.
It is all part of a 10 year, $2.2-billion strategy, called ‘Reaching Home.’
The government is also expected to soon introduce legislation in parliament to set an official poverty line for the country, and set out a goal of slashing the poverty rate in half by the year 2030.
The law would also create a council on poverty to advise the minister and require annual reports to Parliament on the government’s progress.
Ottawa is promising dedicated funding for the territories and says there will also be new spending targeting Indigenous Peoples.
