OTTAWA (NEWS 1130) – Cabinet ministers and MPs are jumping to the prime minister’s defence after reports surfaced some insiders are already planning for his succession if the Liberals don’t win another majority in the fall election.

Reports had stated party members met to discuss the option of former Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney replacing Justin Trudeau as the Liberal Party leader.

Carney is the current governor of the Bank of England.

Infrastructure Minister Francois-Phillipe Champagne said there is no question who is leading them.

“I can tell you there’s no one talking about issues with respect to leadership,” Champagne said. “We know who’s the leader, we know what we need to do in times like that and we will work together to make sure we win the next election.”

Justice Minister David Lametti said caucus is united in their support of Trudeau.

“I have no questions on the leadership of my leader. He’s been an outstanding prime minister, and I’m going to continue to work for him as hard as I possibly can.”

Carney’s term with the Bank of England will end in early 2020.
