Trudeau, head of EU take jabs at Donald Trump over racially-charged comments

MONTREAL (NEWS 1130) – Canada’s prime minister and the head of the European Union are taking some clear digs at U.S. President Donald Trump following the recent controversy around his racially charged attacks against four congresswomen of colour.

After wrapping up an economic summit in Montreal on Thursday, President of the EU Donald Tusk began his remarks saying he felt at home in Canada.

“Because in Montreal, I didn’t hear anyone shouting ‘Send him back,'” he said.

It was a not-so-subtle jab at Trump and his supporters, who at a rally Wednesday night doubled down on his recent tweets saying the four congresswomen of colour should “go back where they came from” if they don’t like his policies. That prompted the crowd to chant “Send her back.”

Tusk was hesitant to criticize further, but Justin Trudeau did not appear to have a problem with it.

“I think the comments made were hurtful, wrong, and completely unacceptable,” Trudeau said. “I want everyone in Canada to know that those comments are completely unacceptable.”

Tusk did add if something is totally unacceptable, it has to be called out despite the impact it might have on business and trade.

 

Trump now says he disagrees with the chants, even though he didn’t discourage them at the rally, and the message was similar to his own words.
