OTTAWA – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the federal government will spend up to $82 billion on measures to support the Canadian economy through the COVID-19 pandemic.

The money will come through a combination of direct supports for workers and businesses.

The economic package also includes $55 billion in tax deferrals for business.

Other measures include a $1.9 billion boost to the Canada Child Benefit and $5.5 billion to enhance GST credits.

The government will also double the funding for a federal homeless initiative and provide $50 million for women’s shelters.

More to come.
