Hand washing up, other grooming routines falling by the wayside during pandemic: survey

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Canadians are washing their hands more during this pandemic, but we aren’t bathing or showering as much.

That’s what a recent survey from Field Agent Canada suggests.

The survey, which polled 652 Canadians on April 10, finds handwashing is way up since social distancing guidelines came into place; Canadians, on average, are washing their hands 13.5 times per day, an increase of 94 per cent from usual.

But, the survey suggests we’re bathing and showering 10 per cent less than before those guidelines were put into place.

As well, we’re wearing deodorant and antiperspirant 16 per cent less per week, and we’re using facial creams or moisturizers eight per cent less per week.

Women aren’t doing their makeup as much, and on average, Canadians are wearing less perfume and cologne.

The survey also suggests men and women are different when it comes to hair care.

Seventy-four per cent of women surveyed say they are going to wait until barbers or salons re-open before they try and get their hair cut, compared to just 37 per cent of men.

About 34 per cent of men, meanwhile, say they will take out the clippers and try cutting it themselves.

Men are also shaving less during the pandemic, from 2.9 times per week beforehand, compared to 1.9 times per week now.

The General Manager of Field Agent Canada, Jeff Doucette, says it means the beauty industry has significant challenges to overcome because of COVID-19.
