MONTREAL (CITYNEWS) – Grocery stores in Montreal are once again open seven days a week as the province continues to relax its COVID-19 restrictions.

Since April, grocery stores had been closed on Sundays to give workers a break. That is changing today.

“Stressful, but we are doing it,” said Nick Lub, manager at Supermarche PA. “We’re not low on anything and we’d like to keep it that way if possible.

“I really think that it gives customers peace of mind and they can come more relaxed, not that tense doing their shopping.”

Workers are hoping that extra day for in-person grocery shopping will help ease some of the strain on deliveries, as online orders have been piling up for the last two months.

“Now it is so hectic to work, up to 50 orders per day,” said Sravan Muddam, a PA delivery person. “But of course, we are serving 50 people in society so that makes me very happy.”

According to the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, COVID-19 cases in Quebec grocery stores have remained low during the pandemic. Some say strict hygiene measures have been key.

“No cases whatsoever in the store or regarding the families of our employees, and we’re really happy with that,” said Lub. “We’ve kind of gotten used to this new routine.”
