Police believe MUHC shooter was not targeting SPVM officers

MONTREAL (CityNews) — Montreal police shared the latest updates of their ongoing investigation into gunshots fired at the site of the McGill University Health Centre on the early morning hours of Aug. 24.

Police chief Sylvain Caron said the force initially believed the shots had been aimed at SPVM officers.

After the major crimes unit analyzed the scene and the surrounding area, they concluded the shots were fired from a green space between Saint-Jacques Street and Pullman Street, south of the hospital.

After a ballistics analysis, it appears unlikely the person who fired the gun could have intentionally targeted police who were then in the parking lot, said Caron.

The most likely scenario is that a firearm was discharged around the area and a bullet ricocheted and grazed a police officer’s arm.

No serious injuries were sustained.
