Stepmother of slain Granby girl appeals verdict & sentence

By CityNews staff

The stepmother of the Granby girl that died in April 2019 is appealing her guilty verdict and sentence.

She was found guilty of second-degree murder and forcible confinement in December, sentenced to life in prison, with no chance of parole for 13 years.

The 38-year-old had 30 days to appeal the decision and filed it just before deadline.

A jury deliberated for a only a few hours before reaching their verdict.

During the trial, the seven-year-old’s final moments revealed: she was wrapped head to toe in duct tape, begging to be untied and tried to escape the day before.

Police officers also testified how emaciated the girl was when they were called to the scene and discovered her body.

The young girl’s death sparked a commission into Youth Protection, who had been following the child, and the Quebec government committed to recommendations to reform the system across the province.

The girl’s father pled guilty to confinement in December, avoiding a trial. He was sentenced to four years in prison last week.
