Report: Man who stabbed wife, teenager in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu was RCMP officer

Quebec’s Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI) has launched a probe after a 48-year-old man was fatally shot early Wednesday by police in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, south of Montreal.

The man allegedly stabbed his wife and her 15-year-old teenager, before being shot dead by the police.

French-language station TVA is reporting the man was an RCMP police officer.

Police received a call around 2 a.m. from a man saying he had committed an “irreparable act.”

When officers arrived at the residence on Biat Street, they were met by a man armed with a knife.

During the confrontation, police opened fire, hitting him at least once.

He was later declared dead in hospital.

An eight-year-old girl was also inside the house at the time of the attack, but was not injured.

Provincial police are investigating the double murder attempt, while the BEI investigation is focusing on the police shooting and man’s death.
