Group wants Quebec to take responsibility for Ukrainian child’s ‘preventable’ death

By News Staff

The fatal hit-and-run of seven-year-old Ukrainian girl Mariia Legenkovska last week in Montreal has prompted various calls for change and an increase in safety measures.

Mariia was struck by a motorist while walking to school on the morning of Dec. 13.

A group dedicated to the safety of pedestrians, Piétons Québec, is calling on the provincial government to take responsibility for the child’s “preventable” death.

Piétons Québec says 14 pedestrians were seriously hurt or killed in the province in the past two weeks alone.

The group says 647 pedestrians were killed in Quebec in the last 10 years.

Piétons Québec spokesperson Sandrine Cabana-Degani held a press conference outside the Montreal offices of the Quebec premier on Monday.

Since Mariia’s death, several people have called on politicians to implement measures to make school zones and corridors safer across the island of Montreal and the province.
