Quebec man, 20, charged in latest Ontario grandparent scam

A 20-year-old Quebec man is facing charges in an alleged grandparent scam after an elderly victim lost $10,000.
York Regional Police said an investigation was launched in December 2022 after an 85-year-old received a call requesting money to help a relative in jail or legal trouble.
After the victim took out the money, York Regional Police said a male suspect posing as a courier attended their location to pick it up. A total of $10,000 was stolen from the victim, investigators said.

The suspect courier was identified as 20-year-old Jake Boyko of Brossard, Que. He’s facing three charges, including fraud exceeding $5,000, extortion and possession of proceeds of crime.
Police released a photo of the accused, hoping more victims come forward.
Police forces across the GTA have reported several similar grandparent scams, including a recent incident in Mississauga, where a suspect told an elderly victim that her nephew was involved in a car accident and was held in jail for bail. He claimed he would need $8,000 to have the nephew released.
