NDG residents threaten class-action lawsuit due to intense flooding

By News Staff

Some residents of NDG say they have been dealing with repeated flooding for many years, and it’s been worse this summer due to heavy rain and thunderstorms.

During the storm that hit Montreal on July 13, some say they had water to their heads in their basements and garages.

Those affected live in the Loyola district of NDG – between Coronation Street and Connaught Street, near the intersection of Côte-Saint-Luc.

They voiced their concerns Wednesday morning, accompanied by city councillors from the official Opposition.

“This problem isn’t going to go away and we’re not going to go away,” said Ilana Grostern, who lives on Connaught Street. “Please help us. Please do your duty and repair the infrastructure in our area.”

They are urging the municipal administration to come up with solutions, including repairing infrastructure they say has been problematic for years.

“We are asking the city to please put in their budget, repair the problems pending right now and in all future budgets have money set aside to do infrastructure,” said Morris Weiss, who lives on Clinton Street.

Residents say they are ready to file a class-action lawsuit against the city if necessary.

The city says it is working to adapt the infrastructure.

“There’s a lack of transparency, there’s a lack of accountability, and there’s a lack of willingness to act and find solutions,” said Stéphanie Valenzuela, the Opposition city councillor for the Darlington district.
