A Montreal-based fundraiser is launching with the aim of integrating young newcomers into the sports community.
The 1st Annual Arctiq Charity Pro-Am Scramble is a charity golf tournament hosted by Arctiq, a technology services firm with offices in Toronto and Montreal.
“It’s the business community supporting new arrivals in Montreal and helping their children get into team sports,” said Greg Chenier, vice president of sales at Arctiq.
Chenier, who also serves on the board of SportJeunesse Quebec, the new chapter of KidSport Canada, states the goal is to raise $50,000. The funds raised at the charity golf tournament will help subsidize registration fees, providing underprivileged children access to sports.
“It was important for me. I grew up ski racing and dragon boating, and now I have a passion for golf. My son is fortunate to have the privilege to participate in team sports and golf as well, and I would love to provide access to less privileged children,” said Chenier.
Money raised at the event will go to the Welcome Collective, a Montreal-based organization assisting asylum seekers.
“Building new friendships, aiding with integration, facilitating language acquisition, boosting self-esteem, and teaching new skills—all these aspects are crucial in a child’s life. It’s not just about formal education, physical activity goes hand in hand,” said Dina Souleiman, executive director at the Welcome Collective.
“Ensuring they feel a part of the community is exceptionally important because they arrive here without knowing the language. What better way than kicking a soccer ball around the field to get to know their neighbors and fellow community members?” added Chenier.
The charity golf tournament will take place on September 15th at Golf Le Diable in Mont Tremblant. To donate, go to KidSport Canada.
