Bereaved grandmother is fighting for shorter court deadlines

By CityNews Staff

A 63-year-old lady, whose daughter and grandchildren were allegedly killed in a domestic dispute a year ago on the South Shore of Montreal, demonstrated Monday morning in front of the Longueuil courthouse.

She’s denouncing the delays in legal proceedings, which she says are excessively long.

Sunday marked a sad anniversary for Sylvie Guertin. It’s been a year since her 38-year-old daughter Synthia Bussières and her two grandchildren, five-year-old Éliam and two-year-old Zac, were killed on September 24, 2022.

That day, Mohamad Al Ballouz allegedly stabbed to death his partner of more than a dozen years, before drowning their two young children, in their condo located near the Samuel-De Champlain Bridge, in Brossard.

The news was devastating for Guertin, who says that without the support of her family she would not have been able to go on.

She says she had seen signs of problems in her daughter’s marriage, but could have never predicted something like this.

Since their deaths, Guertin has been furious to see the snail-like pace of the legal process. The system is clogged because of shortages of judges and clerks.

Al Ballouz is detained at a prison in Sorel-Tracy, awaiting trial for these three murders.

The preliminary investigation will only take place in January 2024.
