Quebec bans unregistered mopeds and motorbikes from bike paths, sidewalks, and roads

By News Staff

Quebecers on bike paths, sidewalks, or public roads who are using uncertified or unregistered mopeds and motorbikes to get around will be fined.

Quebec’s auto insurance board (SAAQ) announced the new measure on Wednesday, explaining that an increase of unregistered mopeds and motorbikes that don’t comply with safety standards has led to dangerous situations for cyclists and pedestrians.

Unregistered vehicles that look like mopeds and motorbikes are much heavier and can attain much faster speeds than bikes and can create dangerous situations for pedestrians and cyclists around the city.

The SAAQ says that it’s banning unregistered vehicles that don’t comply with safety standards in fairness to those who own motorbikes or mopeds that are compliant and carry the appropriate driver’s license.

Those caught on an unregistered moped or motorbike can be fined anywhere between $300 and $600.
