Concordia University celebrates 50 years in Montreal

Montreal’s Concordia University celebrates its 50th anniversary this week.

Concordia has nearly 50,000 students.

Concordia has been around for more than five decades, and its campus has doubled in size throughout the years.

“The institution grew from the roots of Loyola College and Sir George Williams University, which merged to become Concordia on Aug. 24, 1974,” reads a press release.

According to Concordia President Graham Carr, Concordia was recently named the top university in North America under 50.

“Our local, national and international reputation has thrived, while Concordia’s standing in every measurable index has flourished,” said Carr. “Our university’s upward progress is the result of the steadfast dedication of students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors, friends and volunteers.”

Over 60 per cent of Concordia’s undergraduate and graduate students are from Quebec, while 10 per cent come from other Canadian provinces.

The remaining students are from all over the world, making up 23.4 per cent of the campus population.

“A recent study shows the university adds nearly $2 billion to the Quebec economy annually through its operations, human capital, productivity and innovation,” noted the press release.
