Woman murdered in Candiac after alleged death threats, partner arrested

By News Staff

A 36-year-old man was charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of Guangmei Ye, 29, in Candiac, on Montreal’s South Shore.

Shilei Du, the suspect, was the woman’s partner, and had previously been ordered to stay away from her after he allegedly made death threats towards her in September. According to a bill of indictment, the threats were made in a conjugal context.

He had pleaded not guilty and was granted bail under certain conditions on Oct. 15, including not being within 500 metres of the victim.

On Sunday morning, a call came into 911 from a worried acquaintance, alerting police to a possible issue at the woman’s residence on de Fontenelle in Candiac.

Upon their arrival, officers discovered the woman’s body. Her death was confirmed on the scene.

The suspect was arrested shortly after, and has since made a brief appearance at the Longueuil courthouse to face the premeditated murder charge.

The investigation was initiated by the Régie intermunicipale de police Roussillon before being transferred to the Sûreté du Québec’s Crimes Against the Person Division.

Police have not revealed the exact circumstances surrounding the death of the victim, but according to a charge sheet, the murder may have happened on or around Nov. 7.

Du, whose current address is listed in Montreal, was arrested on Sunday at the home where Ye was killed.

The case is scheduled to return to court on Nov. 19.

This is the 23rd woman to be murdered in the province since the beginning of the year, and the 13th to die in the context of possible domestic violence.
