Montreal under special weather statement: freezing rain and snow coming

As the holidays approach, will the Montreal weather be a gift?

Well, Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for the city on Monday.

“A major weather system will develop along the American East Coast and will track up through Quebec overnight Wednesday night,” said the weather agency. “Bringing significant rainfall amounts and temperatures well above the freezing mark.”

They added that “water is likely to accumulate on roads and in low-lying areas. A significant rise in the flow and water level of some rivers and streams is expected. In addition, winds associated with this system will be strong at times. Small, loose objects could be tossed or blown away.”

On Monday, snow is expected to begin late this afternoon — with freezing rain overnight.

It is set to feel like -15 with the wind chill this evening.

Come Tuesday, risk of freezing rain early in the morning — high of 4 degrees.

The temperature increasing slightly for Wednesday, with a daytime high of 5.

However, the weather agency states that there will be a rapid drop in temperatures on Thursday morning.

“Could lead to sudden freezing of various surfaces,” they explained. “Consider changing any non-essential travel plans for this period.”

Skies should clear on Friday, with cloudy periods at night.
