Montreal launches information campaign to support renters amid housing crisis

In the midst of a housing crisis, the City of Montreal has launched a new information campaign aimed at helping renters facing steep rent increases and a shortage of affordable housing.

The campaign seeks to inform renters about their rights and assist them in avoiding the use of the city’s relocation services, in partnership with the Office municipal d’habitation de Montréal (OMHM). By law, landlords must send rent increase notices by March 31 for leases starting July 1, and tenants have one month to respond.

Benoit Dorais, vice-president of the executive committee, emphasized that “the housing crisis in Montreal has dramatic consequences for some households,” leaving them without a home due to an inability to find affordable options. He stressed the importance of knowing one’s rights in order to better enforce them.

Renters facing significant increases are not obligated to accept the hike. Renters can negotiate the increase with their landlord and refuse excessive rent hikes. Before deciding to break a lease, renters are also advised to think carefully, as affordable housing options are scarce in Montreal.

Renters are encouraged to visit Montreal.ca for more information and tools.
