Quebec senior rescued after carport collapses amid snowstorm in L’Assomption

By News Staff

Patrol officers from the L’Assomption/Saint-Sulpice Police Department rescued a woman in her 80s who had been buried under a carport that collapsed amid Sunday’s major snowstorm that brought blizzard conditions to much of Quebec.

The woman’s husband, concerned that she hadn’t returned from caring for a neighbour’s pet, contacted authorities.

“The first officer on the scene noticed that the carport had collapsed under the weight of the precipitation. The lady’s coat was visible under the snow. He rushed to free her and was able to free her face. The woman was breathing and conscious,” wrote the Service de sécurité incendie de L’Assomption/Saint-Sulpice on it’s Facebook page.

The police worked in collaboration with firefighters and paramedics to get the woman out from under the snow and to a hospital.

“Thanks to everyone’s quick intervention, the woman is out of danger,” they said on social media.

The Police Department would like to extend its warmest thanks to the neighbours who came to help clear the driveway, armed with snowblowers and shovels, which enabled the evacuation to proceed without delay!”
