Fire index high to very high in western Quebec, warns SOPFEU

By The Canadian Press

While it’s cold and wet in the eastern part of the province, this isn’t necessarily the case in the western regions of Quebec, where the fire danger level ranges from high to very high.

The Forest Fire Protection Society (SOPFEU) is asking people in these areas to be careful with their outdoor activities. “This is definitely not the time to be burning waste!” the statement read on its Facebook page Saturday morning.

The SOPFEU reminds us that in spring, it only takes a few hours of sunshine and wind to dry out soil covered with dead plants and other debris, such as twigs and conifer needles.

Special attention is therefore required this weekend, particularly in Abitibi, Outaouais and the Laurentians, but also in the Lanaudière and Mauricie regions.
