Members of the public will be able to purchase passes to attend the national tribute ceremony for Serge Fiori starting Monday afternoon.
The singer-songwriter, who died at the age of 73 on June 24, was granted a state funeral by the Quebec government. With the family’s agreement, it will ultimately be a national tribute ceremony to be held at Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier at Place des Arts on July 15.
The office of the Premier of Quebec François Legault announced in a press release on Friday that free tickets will be available starting Monday, July 7, at 3 p.m., on the Place des Arts website.
The July 15 ceremony will begin at 3 p.m. in the Montreal performance hall.
Organizers say they have ensured that tickets cannot be resold, as was the case during the tribute ceremony to Karl Tremblay, the singer of Cowboys Fringants.
They warn that people who purchased tickets off-site will be identified and will not be able to attend the event.
Tickets for the Karl Tremblay memorial service in November 2023 sold out within minutes, with some resale sites listing tickets for several hundred dollars.
“The organizers of this memorial service have ensured that all technological means have been put in place to prevent these tickets obtained free of charge from being sold and becoming a source of profit,” the statement said.
According to Legault’s office, the ceremony will be an opportunity for the singer’s grieving fans “to pay a final tribute to an artist and creator who profoundly influenced Quebec culture and helped shape our musical landscape.”
Serge Fiori played a significant role in Quebec’s musical history, particularly with Harmonium. The group released their self-titled debut album in 1974, which included several important songs in the Quebec repertoire, including “Pour un instant” and “Un musiciens parmi tant d’autres.”
The band only released two more albums – “If We Needed a Fifth Season” and “L’Heptade” – before disbanding.
Fiori then made a career as a duo with Richard Séguin, then as a solo artist.
A book of condolences has been made available to the public wishing to send a message to the family of Serge Fiori, here.
