A vehicle carrying three people ended up in the Lachine Canal Tuesday evening in Montreal’s Ville-Marie borough. Speed and alcohol are believed to be factors.
Montreal Police (SPVM) were called to the scene of the accident around 8:45 p.m., where they discovered that a pickup truck had plunged into the canal near Mill and Riverside streets.
The driver, a 33-year-old man, and the two passengers, aged 21 and 29, managed to escape the vehicle after the accident. The SPVM confirms that none of them were injured.
The driver failed the breathalyzer test and was arrested for driving while impaired by alcohol and dangerous driving, reported Caroline Chèvrefils, spokesperson for the SPVM.
He was released on a promise to appear in Montreal Municipal Court on Oct. 7.
According to the police’s initial theories, the van “was traveling at high speed” before skidding into the waterway.
