Chair of the board of directors of Fierté Montréal resigns

By The Canadian Press

The chair of the board of directors of Fierté Montréal, Bernard Truong, has resigned, just as the organization’s festival is in full swing.

The news, first reported by several media outlets on Monday afternoon, was confirmed by Fierté Montréal in an email statement.

The organization said that Truong announced to the board of directors that he was stepping down from his position “for personal reasons.”

Marlot Marleau, who was secretary of the Pride Montreal board of directors, has been appointed by the board to serve as president of the organization.

“This change within the board has no impact on the activities of the Pride Montreal Festival currently underway,” Fierté Montréal said in a statement.

Fierté Montréal has recently found itself in turmoil over its stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Some organizations have asked Fierté Montréal to take a position on the war, while others have accused the festival organizers of associating with groups that support Israel and violence against Palestinians.

Singer Safia Nolin announced last week that she would not be performing at the festival due to the presence of a group considered Zionist in the Pride parade.

Fierté Montréal subsequently responded by “clarifying its position on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.” In a social media post, the festival said it condemns “the ongoing genocide in Gaza” and expresses “its solidarity with the Palestinian people.”

In the same post, Fierté Montréal said it had “made the decision to refuse participation in the Pride parade to organizations that promote hate speech.”

The festival runs until August 10, the day the Pride parade will march through the streets of the city.
