Dr. Luc Boileau will no longer be Quebec’s public health director, a position he has held since 2022. He will be replaced by Dr. Caroline Quach-Thanh.
She will take up her new duties, which include the title of assistant deputy minister at the Ministry of Health and Social Services, on Sept. 29. Dr. Quach-Thanh is well known in the media. Her expertise as a microbiologist-infectiologist at CHU Sainte-Justine often led her to be part of press conferences and interviews at the height of the COVID-19 crisis.
Dr. Quach-Thanh is also a full professor in the Department of Microbiology, Infectiology, and Immunology and the Department of Pediatrics at l’Université de Montréal.
Dr. Boileau’s departure comes after an exchange of insults he had just two weeks ago with a passerby who was riding dangerously on an electric scooter in Montreal. The video went viral on social media, and Dr. Boileau quickly apologized, acknowledging that he had made inappropriate comments.
Dr. Boileau had initially served as interim public health director in January 2022 following the resignation of Dr. Horacio Arruda. He was officially appointed to the position in June of that year and his term was normally four years.
When he was appointed, Health Minister Christian Dubé praised Dr. Boileau’s expertise and experience, as well as his leadership during the latest waves of the COVID-19 pandemic.
