Canadiens trade Carey Price to San Jose Sharks

The Montreal Canadiens have traded star goaltender Carey Price’s contract to the San Jose Sharks.

General manager Kent Hughes made the announcement late Friday afternoon, saying the deal was made for defenseman Gannon Laroque.

The move was expected as the Canadiens were sitting $5.9 million over the cap for the 2025-26 season.

During his time with the Canadiens, Price played in 712 games, where he posted a 361-261-79 record. He also managed a .917 save percentage, a 2.15 goals against average, and 49 shutouts.

He was awarded the Vezina, William M. Jennings, Ted Lindsay, and Hart Memorial trophies in 2014-15, the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy in 2021-22, and helped the Canadiens reach the Stanley Cup Final in 2021.

Price’s last game for the Habs was on April 29, 2022, as the goaltender was battling a lingering knee injury.

During a 2023 interview before the season, Price said he was still getting swelling in his knee, which affects his long-term ability to lace up the skates.

“Honestly, on a day-to-day basis, it feels really good. I come here towards the start of training camp, and I feel like I could still go out there and wreak havoc,” said Price during the 2023 interview. “Honestly, on a day-to-day basis, I feel really good, but when I do certain things on a consistent basis, it’s a very solid reminder that my knee is not in a position to take the brunt of a full season’s workload.”

Price picked up that injury in Game 1 of the 2014 Eastern Conference final when he was taken out by New York Rangers’ Chris Kreider.
