Defense Industry: QS Sounds the Alarm Over Possible Quebec Subsidies

By The Canadian Press

Québec solidaire (SQ) does not share the Legault government’s vision, which seeks to profit economically from the craze for defense industry goods in Canada and Europe, in the current global context.

QS is sounding the alarm about the Legault government’s intention to offer massive subsidies to the arms industry through Investissement Québec, a press release stated Sunday.

“Using Quebecers’ money to manufacture lethal weapons is a red line that must not be crossed (…) and Quebecers deserve answers” on the guidelines and criteria that will be met in contracts, declared Solidaire’s economic spokesperson, Alejandra Zaga-Mendez.

She indicated that she sent a letter on Friday “to summon members of the Committee on the Economy and Labor to shed light on these new investments.”

QS calls for a public debate on the conditions surrounding the use of public funds in the military industry.

“For Québec solidaire, it is unacceptable that foreign defense giants profit from millions of public dollars to manufacture lethal weapons without any democratic oversight,” its press release states.
