Longueuil police (SPAL) have released surveillance video in hopes of identifying a person of interest in connection with a newborn baby left on the doorstep of a home on Montreal’s South Shore late Sunday night.
The video, captured at 10:49 p.m. by a camera at a nearby residence, shows someone walking on a sidewalk along a driveway, holding what appears to be an infant. The baby was found around 11 p.m. on Bourgeoys Street in the Vieux-Longueuil area.

Looking for answers, not arrests
At a press conference Tuesday, Longueuil police (SPAL) spokesperson Jacqueline Pierre said their immediate goal is not to lay charges but to support the baby’s parents.
“We’re not here to judge, but rather to ensure that you are safe and well supported in the circumstances,” Pierre said, speaking directly to the child’s mother and father.
“Our priority for us police officers and for the medical team is right now you. We are concerned about your physical and also your psychological health,” she added.
Pierre urged the parents — or anyone who may know them — to come forward directly or through a friend or a community organization.
The police do not know yet if the baby was born in a hospital. A future warrant would help them confirm if that was the case.

Surveillance video shows potential witness
Pierre said the individual seen in the surveillance video may have information that could help police locate the child’s parents. It’s unclear whether the person is the one who left the baby or someone else connected to the case.
“We cannot confirm that element either,” said Pierre. “It looks like that person is holding something in their arms, possibly the baby, but we don’t know if it’s the mother, a man, a woman, an adult or a teenager.”
Pierre said if someone recognized the person in the surveillance video by their clothing or how they walk, they should contact the police. “[Even] a little detail could help a lot,” she said.
Investigation expands to surrounding area
Police confirmed that they searched a nearby park using a canine unit. They have also been gathering footage from homes and traffic cameras in the area.
“We are investigating all the camera footage that we can get — cars, houses. We are taking everything into account,” Pierre said. “So far that’s what we have — our eyes and the help of the population.”
Baby found in stable condition
The baby boy was born after approximately 34 weeks of pregnancy and still had his umbilical cord attached when he was found, according to police. He was taken to hospital and is reported to be in good health.
“The baby is in good health, even if [he was prematurely born], we just found him in a condition where we could save his life and take care of him,” Pierre said.
She added that the child’s legal and medical care going forward will be handled by the appropriate provincial authorities.
