Police across Quebec are increasing road patrols and enforcement this Thanksgiving long weekend, targeting distracted and reckless driving.

In collaboration with the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ), the coordinated national operation targeting distracted driving and reckless behaviour runs from Oct. 10 to 16.

This year, “special attention will be given to heavy vehicles committing infractions,” the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) said in a statement, noting that “several control operations” took place on Friday.

The chief coroner also ordered a public inquiry Friday into deaths involving heavy trucks that occurred this summer. Public Safety Minister Ian Lafrenière, who requested the inquiry, expressed concern over “a rise in accidents” involving these vehicles.

According to SAAQ data, in 2024, 100 of 379 road deaths involved a heavy vehicle, an increase of 35.1 per cent compared with 2023.

Patrols will also monitor compliance with road signs and take action against tailgating, distracted drivers, and those performing dangerous manoeuvres.

The SQ reminded the public that reckless behaviour violating the Highway Safety Code accounts for 57 per cent of collisions in urban and school areas and 65 per cent of accidents at intersections.
