Exo has begun commissioning the first of 10 new low-emission Charger locomotives built by Siemens Mobility, marking a major step in modernizing its commuter train network.
The new locomotives will gradually replace the F59PH models that have been in service for more than 35 years. They can pull 10 cars instead of eight, offering more capacity and flexibility while meeting stricter emission standards.
“Through its various initiatives, our government is helping organizations develop and make sustainable transportation more attractive in Quebec,” said Jonatan Julien, Quebec’s Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility. “As a result, thousands of users will benefit from more modern and environmentally friendly locomotives.”
Exo says the rollout underscores its commitment to improving reliability, customer experience, and environmental performance. Four locomotives have already been delivered, with the remainder expected by October 2026. Each unit undergoes testing before entering service.
“The introduction of the new locomotives on our network marks an important step in the modernization of Exo’s train fleet,” said Marc Rousseau, executive director of Exo.
“This launch demonstrates our commitment to sustainable mobility and the continuous improvement of the quality of service offered to our users, while contributing to increased environmental performance.”
The locomotives will first operate on the Saint-Jérôme line, which serves the North Shore, Laval, and parts of northern Montreal. The project is funded in part by the Government of Quebec under its Assistance Program for Public Transit for People.
