A fight that turned violent near the Place-Saint-Henri metro station is now considered the 29th murder on the Island of Montreal since the beginning of 2025.
The victim, a 42-year-old man, died from his injuries at the hospital, confirmed Johany Charland, spokesperson for the Montreal Police Service (SPVM), on Sunday morning.
A call to 911 on Sunday at around 3:20 a.m. reported a fight between two individuals near the intersection of Charlebois and Saint-Philippe streets, close to the Place-Saint-Henri metro station in the Le-Sud-Ouest borough.
“Upon arriving at the scene, police officers located the victim, a 42-year-old man, in a wooded area between the metro and the railroad tracks with a serious injury to his upper body. The man had been struck by a sharp object. He was conscious when the police arrived, but his condition deteriorated,” explained another SPVM spokesperson, Jeanne Drouin, earlier.
The man was unconscious when he was transported to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The suspect fled before the police arrived. A large security perimeter was set up in the area.
“The crime scene is still active,” said Officer Charland at around 8:45 a.m.
“The major crimes unit will take charge of the investigation in order to try to understand the causes and circumstances of this event. They are already on site with the mobile command post to begin their investigation,” she said.
Several witnesses were to be interviewed by police during the day. Investigators will also be looking for surveillance cameras near the scene of the murder.
The SPVM investigation is ongoing.
