‘Music is an international language’: Legendary Italian singer-songwriter Pupo in Montreal

“If you love my song without understanding exactly what the song means, it’s because you love the music, my music, and music is an international language,” said Italian singer-songwriter Pupo ahead of his Montreal tour stop. Teresa Romano reports.

Legendary Italian singer and songwriter Pupo has come to Montreal.

He’s bringing his ‘SU DI NOI …LA NOSTRA STORIA’ tour to the city — celebrating 50 years of music on Friday night.

“I’m very, very happy because you must know my first time when I was in Montreal, in Canada, was in 1978. And the first thing I remember, I fell in love here,” said Pupo in an interview with OMNI News at the Citytv studios. “You know, all my songs, I wrote all my songs for, when I fell in love. You know, from me to Canadian people, particularly Canadian women, the feeling that this love never, never ending.”

In 1975, he debuted with his first song Ti scriverò, but it was Pupo’s second album – Gelato al cioccolato – that became his first major success.

In 1980, he competed for the first time at the Sanremo Music Festival with the gold record winning song Su di noi.

It was in 1981 that he wrote his first hit for another artist, Sarà perché ti amo, sung by Ricchi e Poveri at the Sanremo Festival that year.

Pupo says that even if you don’t understand or speak Italian, music is an international language.

“I want to say only thank you, because maybe you find my song, because if you love my song without understanding exactly what the song means, is because you love the music, my music, and music is an international language. And for me, this is the best, best present from you. And I want to say, thank you very much. Thank you very much. And I love you and hope you love me forever.”

Pupo promises he might be back in Montreal in 2027 with his collaborator Ralph Buttino.

“I want to make something, for every time something new. Maybe with a new show in the 2027. And we think about that. But it’s probably, yes, yes.”

But for now, you can catch him live Friday night – 8pm – at the Rialto Theatre on Parc Ave.
