Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) MNA François Tremblay was excluded from caucus a day after he was arrested for impaired driving .
Tremblay, MNA for Dubuc in Quebec’s Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region, was arrested Wednesday night after he was found to have a blood alcohol level nearly double the legal limit when he was stopped by police.
Friday afternoon, the Legault government’s chief whip, François Jacques said, “Following discussions with the member for Dubuc, Mr. François Tremblay, it was mutually agreed that he would withdraw from the Coalition Avenir Québec caucus for the duration of the legal proceedings,” in an email statement to CityNews.
The announcement came after the party said it wasn’t ruling out “any option” regarding Tremblay’s future.
Several media outlets reported Tremblay’s arrest for impaired driving in the La Baie borough of Saguenay on Thursday.
Without confirming the elected official’s identity, the Saguenay Police Service told La Presse Canadienne that officers arrested a man in his 50s around 1:25 a.m. after observing that he had “come into contact with an inanimate object in the area and had gotten stuck in a small snowbank a short distance away.”
“The individual was then taken to the station. He provided two breath samples that were nearly twice the legal limit,” stated Saguenay police spokesperson Hervé Berghela.
The man was released with a summons to appear in court and a suspension of his driver’s licence, Berghela added.
Tremblay has been a member of the National Assembly under the CAQ banner since 2018.
