Montreal’s Le Rouge Bar to close end of January due to rising costs

Le Rouge Bar, a fixture of Montreal’s nightlife, will shutter its doors at the end of the month.

The popular club located on Prince Arthur, just off Saint-Laurent Boulevard, will close down on Jan. 31 due to rising costs after 23 years in operation.

“Over time, the nightlife landscape in Montreal has evolved significantly,” Massimo Minchella, operating partner of Le Rouge Bar, told CityNews. “Operating conditions have changed, costs have increased across the board, and the overall economic reality of running a large venue today is very different than it was years ago.”

“As our lease comes to an end and rental terms shift, it became clear that continuing under these conditions would no longer be sustainable in the long term,” Minchella added.

Le Rouge Bar will join several bars and music venues that have closed in the recent years due to high rents and noise bylaws that imposes heavy fines for violations.

“This decision wasn’t made lightly. It’s the result of many conversations, careful consideration, and a deep respect for what Rouge has meant to the city,” Minchella said.

The nightclub will host its closing event on Jan. 31.
