PM Carney meets ex-Liberal MP in Terrebonne after Supreme Court overturns election

TERREBONNE — Prime Minister Mark Carney met today with former Liberal MP Tatiana Auguste in the Terrebonne riding, following the recent Supreme Court’s decision to invalidate the federal election that put her in office last spring.
Auguste had been declared the winner in Terrebonne over Bloc Québécois candidate Nathalie Sinclair-Desgagné by a single vote after the April 28 election.

But Sinclair-Desgagné challenged the results after a supporter complained that she had tried to vote by mail using a special ballot that was never counted.
Carney and Auguste spoke with residents at a local restaurant in Terrebonne, Que., north of Montreal, and customers applauded her.
Later, The Canadian Press spoke with Terrebonne residents including Nadia Poirier, who had volunteered for the Bloc candidate in the spring election campaign.

Poirier says she supported holding a new byelection, emphasizing that every vote should be counted to uphold democratic integrity.
Justo Rocha, originally from Nicaragua, says every vote matters in a democracy, adding that he comes from a country without democratic freedoms.
Earlier in the day, Carney held a news conference in Montreal to announce Canada’s first-ever defence industrial strategy.
