SPVM investigate 12th femicide of the year after woman found dead in apartment; suspect pronounced dead in hospital

The body of a woman was found lifeless Saturday afternoon in an apartment in the Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension borough of Montreal.
Montreal police (SPVM) confirmed that this was the 12th femicide of the year and 15th murder to occur on Montreal territory since the beginning of the year.
Police officers were called Saturday around 1:45 p.m. to an apartment on 9 Avenue, near Crémazie Boulevard East, to validate the state of health of an individual, said Jeanne Drouin, spokesperson for the SPVM.
Upon arriving at the scene, police discovered the body of a woman unresponsive inside the apartment, Drouin said. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman’s identity has still not been confirmed.
Patrol officers also found a 51-year-old man at the same location with serious injuries to his upper body.
It is possible that the 51-year-old man self-inflicted his injuries, according to police speculation.
“He is considered a suspect at this stage of the investigation,” said Johany Charland, spokesperson for the SPVM, in an update around 10 p.m.
On Thursday, police said the man died in hospital.
The SPVM confirmed Sunday that the injuries of the two people involved were caused by a possibly sharp object.
The man was transported by Urgences-santé to a hospital where his condition was still considered critical. He was expected in court on Monday but could not attend due to his condition.
Montreal police confirmed that the two were in an intimate partner relationship and said the woman’s body showed signs of violence.
