Group vandalizes Quebec AI Institute, Mila, in Rosemont: Montreal police

“I came here to the conference to learn more about AI technology,” said Shelbi Sias, an ALL IN attendee from Alaska who travelled to Montreal for the event, one of Canada’s largest AI and technology conferences. Adriana Gentile reports.

About 10 individuals vandalized Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute (Mila) in the Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie borough on Tuesday.

Montreal Police (SPVM) were called to the scene before midnight following reports of damage to a building located on Saint-Urbain Street, near Saint-Zotique Street West.

A 25-year-old woman was the only person arrested so far. She was taken to an investigation centre to determine the extent of her involvement in the incident.

According to initial findings, several windows of the building were smashed, and graffiti was applied to the walls.

Among the graffiti written on the building was the phrase “expletive AI,” while the targeted building is believed to house companies related to artificial intelligence.

Police say they will analyze surveillance camera footage from the area and examine any potential evidence.

These acts of vandalism were committed just hours before the start of the ALL IN conference, which is billed as “Canada’s largest artificial intelligence and technology event”.

Mila is one of the organizers of this event which will take place Wednesday and Thursday at the Palais des congrès de Montréal and virtually.

The investigation is ongoing.
