Vacation shaming: new study finds Canadians aren’t taking all the vacation they’re owed

By Amanda Wawryk

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Canadians value time off work, but a new survey finds we aren’t always taking the vacation days we’re owed.

The survey, commissioned by the travel company Skyscanner, has found only two-thirds of Canadians take all of the time they’re owed – which could be attributed to a rising workplace trend called “vacation shaming.”

What exactly does that mean?

It’s when co-workers or bosses use guilt or peer pressure to discourage employees from using their vacation time.

Nearly 100 per cent of respondents said they value their time off work, but only 66 per cent said they actually take the vacation days they’re entitled to. British Columbians seemed to have some of the best work-life balance – its residents, along with those of Quebec, were least likely to experience vacation shaming.

The trend is most prevalent among millennials, with nearly two-thirds saying they’ve dealt with vacation shaming at work.
