Woman dead after car goes into Lachine Canal

A 76-year-old woman was killed after her vehicle skidded into the Lachine Canal on Sunday afternoon.

It happened at around 3 p.m. near the corner of Saint-Patrick and Lapierre, in the LaSalle borough.

According to Montreal police, the woman was driving on Lapierre street at a high speed and hit the guardrail on Saint-Patrick, then ending up in the canal.

Her body was found in the vehicle by the SPVM’s dive team in the evening when they pulled out the car. She was alone at the time.

The investigation is ongoing to determine what exactly happened.

The vehicle will also be sent for testing to determine if a mechanical error may have occurred.

A coroner’s investigation will also help establish whether the woman had any health issues while at the wheel.
