Truck goes up in flames on Highway 15, causes road closures

A semi-trailer truck went up in flames at the Champlain bridge exit in the Nun’s Island sector overnight.

The Montreal fire department was alerted to the blaze around 2 a.m. The heavy vehicle was located on Highway 15 Northbound, parked under the REM overpass.

The flames could be seen for several kilometers and the truck is a completely loss.

The fire started in the truck, but the cause is still unknown.

No one was injured.

Highway 15 Northbound was closed between Bonaventure and Gaétan-Laberge until Friday afternoon as officials inspected the REM tracks following the fire. Traffic was forced off Highway 15 Northbound to the Bonaventure autoroute. There were no affects on traffic heading Southbound on Highway 15.

“The aim of the inspection is to confirm, firstly, that motorway traffic can be resumed. Secondly, to determine whether REM tests can continue between Nuns’ Island and Gare Centrale station. In the meantime, all test activities will continue between Brossard and Nuns’ Island stations,” said Emmanuelle Rouillard-Moreau, spokesperson for REM developer CDPQ-Infra, in an email Friday morning.

The inspection and tests continued Friday afternoon, after traffic resumed.
