British fish and chip shops serving shark, study finds

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A new study into British fish and chip shops has found that many customers have been unwittingly eating shark.

Researchers conducted DNA testing on dozens of take-out samples from shops across the United Kingdom, as well as from fishmongers and a seafood wholesaler.

The majority of the samples were identified as spiny dogfish, a part of the shark family which is critically endangered in the northeast Atlantic.

The European Union has very strict labeling rules for seafood, but the report’s authors say the terms used are often ambiguous and describe a range of species.

There’s also evidence some of that shark meat is coming from Canada.
