Canadians say U.S. can keep Montana, according to light-hearted poll

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – What do you think about the idea of buying Montana from the U.S.?

A light-hearted poll finds the majority of Canadians aren’t too fond of the idea.

“This is something that’s gathered a lot of momentum over the past couple of weeks and I thought it would be a fun one to ask. But we do see most Canadians are giving the idea a thumbs-down,” said Mario Canseco with Research Co.

“There’s 56 per cent who think the federal government should not consider purchasing Montana.”

A Change.org petition proposes Montana be sold to Canada for $1 trillion. But the Research Co. poll finds most Canadians find that price tag just too steep.

Canseco says people in Alberta may see the purchase more favourably, since it would extend their border farther south. There was also higher levels of support in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, as well as among men and those aged 18 to 34.
