Canada introducing digital charter to combat hate speech, misinformation

PARIS — The federal government is set to unveil a new digital charter in an effort to combat online hate speech, extremist content and election interference.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made the announcement today in Paris during a speech at the VivaTech conference, an international summit that brings together startups and technology leaders.
Many of the details will be unveiled in the coming weeks, but Trudeau says online platforms will be accountable for the contents on their sites.
“Ensuring that the web giants and tech companies take more responsibility for their social and community impacts, including against hatred and violence,” Trudeau told reporters.

But the prime minister says he’s confident the proposed framework will restore the faith of citizens while holding platforms accountable.
Trudeau met with New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern earlier in the day and held a working lunch with French President Emmanuel Macron.
He was set to meet Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales later Thursday.
