Montreal police chief no longer welcome at protest

MONTREAL (CITYNEWS) – Montreal police chief Sylvain Caron will no longer be participating in Sunday’s march against police brutality and racial profiling.

Organizers rescinded their invitation to Caron after a handful of black community groups expressed their discomfort with him being there.

In a joint statement, community groups Hoodstock, Justice for Victims of Police Killings and Tout le Hood en Parle said they opposed the SPVM chief’s participation. They said it would be disrespectful to the victims of police violence.

In a tweet, Montreal police said they “respect the organizers’ decision and will be present to ensure everyone’s safety during the event.”

The march against police brutality and racism in Montreal begins Sunday at 11 a.m.
