Montreal housing crisis sees lowest vacancy rate in 15 years

By Toula Drimonis

MONTREAL (CITYNEWS) – As thousands of Quebecers prepare to move in the coming days, Montreal-based social housing advocacy group FRAPRU is sounding the alarm.

The organization says the city has a serious housing shortage, reflected in the lowest vacancy rate in the past 15 years.

The pandemic – and the economic crisis associated with it – have only made things far worse.

FRAPRU says hundreds of families are still searching for a home as their lease comes to an end July 1.

The City of Montreal is urging those having difficulty finding a place to call 311 so temporary lodging can be arranged for them.
