Parties calling for PM to step down with possible election on horizon

OTTAWA – Conservative leader Andrew Scheer is calling for the prime minister to step down and seems to be trying to drive a wedge between Justin Trudeau and his own caucus.

Scheer says Liberal M-Ps who do not want to be seen as complicit in the WE Charity controversy should demand that their leader quit.

Scheer is also calling for the resignation of Finance Minister Bill Morneau over his role in the controversy.

He says the pair have used the ongoing COVID-19 crisis as cover for their actions.

Scheer adds that the investigation of a multi-million-dollar contract awarded to the organization by the Liberals should be expanded to include the police, the lobbying commissioner and the elections commissioner.

Scheer says he’s not in a position to force an election over the issue in the minority Parliament, indicating that decision should be made by the next leader of the party.

Bloc Quebecois Leader Yves-Francois Blanchet also called on Trudeau and Morneau to resign, and is threatening a motion to censure the government when the House of Commons resumes full business in September.

The BQ is asking Elections Canada to consider what would be necessary to run an election in a pandemic.

The party is also asking House Speaker Anthony Rota to make arrangements for a vote of all 338 M-Ps on or before September 21st.

Health Minister Patty Hajdu says she continues to have confidence in Morneau as finance minister and that he has been a “key player” in Canada’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Scheer adds that the investigation of a multi-million-dollar contract awarded to the organization by the Liberals should be expanded to include the police, the lobbying commissioner and the elections commissioner.
