Quebec gears up for back to school

Masks will be mandatory for Quebec students as of Grade 5 and staff members in common areas of schools and school buses, but not in the classroom. The provincial government made the revision to their anxiously awaited back-to-school plan Monday. As Alyssia Rubertucci reports, some parents and teachers don’t think it goes far enough.

MONTREAL – The Quebec government has unveiled a revised plan for sending children back to school in September amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

It requires students in Grade 5 and up to wear masks in all common areas, except classrooms.

Education Minister Jean-Francois Roberge says the new strategy aims to make communication between teachers and students as easy as possible.

Adding each classroom will be its own bubble, and students will not be required to stay two-metres away from their classmates.

While all elementary and high school students will be expected to return to school, children with significant health problems will be offered a remote learning option.
