MONTREAL (CITYNEWS) – Quebec’s police watchdog says a man brandishing a knife was shot by police Sunday morning in Montreal.

The Independent Investigations Bureau (BEI) says a man with a knife tried to enter a fire station in Montreal North.

Police were called to the scene around 6:45 a.m.

The BEI says police tried to communicate with the man, but he was being uncooperative.

The man then allegedly charged the officers, who opened fire.

The man was taken to hospital, but his life is not believed to be in danger.

The bureau, which investigates whenever citizens are injured or killed during a police operation, has taken charge of the investigation and will be assisted by provincial police.

This is the second shooting involving Montreal police officers in less than 24 hours.

On Saturday, a suspect shot and killed 61-year-old Diane Leblanc and 57-year-old Sylvie Leblanc around 12:20 p.m. in the city’s east end.

BEI says the suspect shot the women and then opened fire on Montreal police officers who arrived on the scene.

A 59-year-old man has been arrested in relation to that alleged double homicide.
