MONTREAL (CITYNEWS) – A worker at an Olymel meat-processing plant in Quebec’s Beauce region has died after testing positive for COVID-19, the company said in a release.
The worker passed away just hours after receiving the positive test result on Tuesday.
Olymel says the facility in Vallee-Jonction, Que., underwent widespread COVID testing beginning Oct. 12 after several employees showed symptoms of the virus. Those tests revealed “several positive cases.”
“Olymel is in contact with the deceased’s family and we offer them all the support they need. An investigation is underway to determine the circumstances that led to the death, and if these are linked to COVID-19,” said Olymel’s Richard Vigneault in the release.
The Syndicat des travailleurs d’Olymel Vallée-Jonction – the union representing the employees – told Quebec’s TVA Nouvelles that more than 80 employees had tested positive.
The Beauce meat-processing plant is in Quebec’s Chaudiere-Appalaches, which is under the province’s red zone designation.
