World’s biggest snow maze, located in Manitoba, is 91% bigger this year to allow for social distancing

WINNIPEG – The world’s largest snow maze, which can be found in Manitoba yet again thanks to the Masse family, is getting even bigger this year.

The Masses have outdone their former Guinness World Record-setting maze by making an even bigger snow maze this year to allow for proper social distancing between people who want to wander the icy labyrinth.

The walkways are wider this year, resulting in a monster of a snow maze, according to creator Casdon Masse. Previously the maze was 30,000 square feet.

“This maze is 91 per cent larger so we are around 50,000 square feet of snow maze wall built this year,” said Masse.

The maze is located in St. Adolphe, Man., just south of Winnipeg, and contains five special theme rooms made of snow.

There is a main entrance and exit to the maze. And every 10 minutes or so, there is also an ‘easy exit’ to leave from. Tickets can be bought online but there are capacity restrictions in place to make sure there are never too many people in the maze at once.

“We’ve got these big towers up here so we can count by the hour how many people are in the snow maze, how many people are on the sleigh ride and snow hill and all that,” said Masse.

There’s also a very large toboggan slide that allows riders to reach speeds of around 25 kilometres an hour.

“It’s about 80 feet long and it’s 60 feet up in the air so it’s definitely pretty intense.”

Massive bricks of ice were cut out of the river near the Masse family home to create the attraction.

Masse says building with snow is a battle against mother nature every single year. The family hopes the ice blocks will survive the summer, which would put them ahead of schedule next year in case the weather is warm.

To maximize time while the snow maze is operational, the family has opened up visiting hours for all seven days of the week.

“Just to keep people happy so they can come on the weekends. If it’s too busy for that, all the slots are booked up, the weekdays are open as well.”
